Nintendo nearly gave Yoshi his own movie
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the company considered making a standalone movie focused on Yoshi and his adventures in New York. While Yoshi was ultimately not a central character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the idea for a solo film was discussed during production.
