Steven Spielberg explained that he turned down directing the first Harry Potter movie to fulfill the dying wish of his friend Stanley Kubrick and direct AI: Artificial Intelligence. Spielberg had already begun casting for Harry Potter but felt compelled to take on Kubrick's unfinished project after his death. AI: Artificial Intelligence was released in 2001, while Chris Columbus ultimately directed the first Harry Potter film.
