You can thank a bad Dungeons and Dragons DM for one of Shin Megami Tensei's coolest mechanics

Former Atlus developer Kazunari Suzuki revealed that the monster negotiation system in the Shin Megami Tensei series originated from his frustration with a Dungeon Master in Dungeons and Dragons. Suzuki wanted to be able to talk to monsters in D&D, but was told it wasn't possible by the rules, leading him to create a similar system for Megami Tensei where players can persuade monsters to join them.
