Blockchain startup Proof of Play has announced its closure, marking another casualty in the struggling crypto gaming industry. The company, founded by FarmVille co-creator Amitt Mahajan, failed to build a sustainable business with its flagship game, Pirate Nation, which integrated NFTs and crypto tokens. This shutdown follows similar failures in the space, including Axie Infinity's economic collapse and Square Enix and Ubisoft's retreats from blockchain-based games.
Proof of Play winding down, says X post — studio silent so far
Crypto gaming studio Proof of Play is reportedly ceasing operations, according to a post from the account @yellowpanther. The studio, co-founded by Amitt Mahajan, has not confirmed the claims on its own channels. Proof of Play previously shut down its game Pirate Nation in September 2025 due to insufficient audience and operational costs.
