Former Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman Bill Mechanic revealed that the studio considered the first X-Men movie a "disaster" and doubted the viability of adapting Marvel comics into films. Mechanic, who backed the project despite internal pushback, was dismissed from Fox shortly before the movie's release in July 2000.
