An archived interview with Daggerfall lead Ted Peterson reveals that the original name for The Elder Scrolls: Arena was a last-minute decision. The game's subtitle 'The Elder Scrolls' was added to explain the lack of arena combat, as the game had evolved significantly from its initial concept. This naming convention ultimately became the foundation for the long-running series.
