AI short stories beat human ones on quality — until readers were told a machine wrote them
A study involving over 2,500 participants found that short stories generated by ChatGPT 4.0 were rated higher in quality and immersion than human-written stories when readers were unaware of the author. However, when informed that an AI wrote the story, reader perception shifted, indicating that preconceived notions about AI capabilities influence judgment. Interestingly, experience with AI systems, not fiction, correlated with correctly identifying AI-generated texts.
