Undead Labs Studio Head Philip Holt revealed that the initial trailer for State of Decay 3, featuring a zombified deer, was created when the game and even the development team were still in very early conceptual stages. The trailer was pre-rendered and did not reflect actual planned gameplay elements like zombie animals, which will not be present in the final game. The announcement was reportedly made in 2020 at Microsoft's request to showcase potential Xbox Series X/S titles.
