The film, animated by Sasayuri and commissioned by NHK, is based on Machiko Kyo's wartime manga and focuses on the Himeyuri students. It will be available in both subtitled and dubbed versions, with the English dub cast to be revealed later this summer.
Adolescence of Utena gets North American theatrical release in June — MP3s & NPCsGKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights for the anime film Adolescence of Utena, marking its first-ever theatrical release in the region. The film will be shown in theaters on June 21 and 22 in its original Japanese subbed format. Adolescence of Utena, originally released in 1999, is a follow-up to the anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena and is noted for its unique blend of fairytale and surrealist opera.

GKIDS has acquired distribution rights for the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland, with a western theatrical release planned after its 2026 Japanese debut. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda expressed his strong desire to adapt the work after reading it.
